Edwards Momentum Fuels Statewide Canvass This Weekend

This weekend, hundreds of John Edwards supporters will fan out across Iowa to spread the word on Edwards growing momentum and plans to fight for hard-working middle class families. Volunteers from grassroots groups, labor unions, staff and other volunteers will be knocking on doors to persuade undecided Iowans to vote for the candidate with the most detailed plans to change our country.

“John Edwards is talking to as many Iowans as he possibly can over these last few days before the caucuses, giving straight answers to their questions,” said Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, Iowa State Director for John Edwards for President. “This weekend, our volunteer and staff canvassers will be speaking with the caucus goers John can’t reach personally.”

Canvass volunteers will include members of the Iowa Postal Workers Union, Iowa Service Employees International Union, the United Steelworkers, the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, the UNITE HERE Chicago Many of the canvassers will be giving out copies of Edwards’ 80-page policy book, "The Plan to Build One America: Bold Solutions for Real Change,” to interested caucus goers.

Edwards’ campaign has been rapidly gaining momentum in recent weeks, with endorsements by Iowa First Lady Mari Culver, Congressman Bruce Braley and, just yesterday, State Senator Brian Schoenjahn (D-Arlington). New public polls released over the last two days show Edwards in a tie for first place.

Edwards kicked off a final eight-day, 38-county “America Rising: Fighting For The Middle Class" bus tour on Thursday.

"John Edwards passed with flying colors"

Dear Joshua,

Amid the fast-paced campaigning, and the ever-increasing mudslinging coming from other candidates, sometimes it's hard to remember that this election is about choosing the next president of the United States of America.

But it is, and it's an important choice. We need a president who not only has the courage and backbone to stand up against the powerful corporations and their lobbyists and fight for the change America needs, but we also need someone with the vision and experience to lead.

As The Washington Post notes in an editorial this morning, when all the presidential candidates were put to the test on Thursday, John Edwards rose above the rest:

www.johnedwards.com/iowa/20071229-the-pakistan-test

Many candidates have been talking about the need for change, or the need for experience. But as all Iowans know, actions speak louder than words, and John Edwards brings a proven record of both.

John has been fighting the special interests on behalf of regular, hard-working Americans his entire life. He's shown that he has the courage to take them on and beat them, time and time again.

He's also proven that he has the experience to react swiftly and intelligently in critical situations, as our president must be able to do. Here's what The Washington Post says:

"The assassination of Benazir Bhutto presented U.S. presidential candidates with a test: Could they respond cogently and clearly to a sudden foreign policy crisis? Within hours some revealing results were in. One candidate, Democrat John Edwards, passed with flying colors. Another, Republican Mike Huckabee, flunked abysmally. Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain were serious and substantive; Republicans Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani were thin. And Barack Obama - the Democratic candidate who claims to represent a new, more elevated brand of politics - committed an ugly foul."

There's no question that John Edwards is uniquely qualified to lead our country. At a time when our reputation abroad has been destroyed by a reckless president, and our government here at home has been taken over by powerful special interests, John is the candidate who is ready to make America America again.

Please help us spread the word during these final five days by forwarding this on to your undecided friends and family members. Then, whether you have a few minutes, or can help out full time, please join us at a local campaign office:

www.johnedwards.com/iowa/offices

If we all pull together over these final few days, we can ensure that Iowans, and people all across the country, choose the candidate who is best prepared to lead the United States - John Edwards.

Thank you for stepping up,

-Roxanne Conlin
Iowa State Co-Chair
John Edwards for President

Edwards' Major Annoucement: I Will Ban Corporate Lobbyists And Foreign Government Lobbyists From My White House

Edwards will end the corruption in Washington by holding his administration to a higher standard by banning corporate lobbyists from serving in an Edwards White House

Today, Senator John Edwards said that he will ban anyone who has worked as a corporate lobbyist or has lobbied for a foreign government from working in an Edwards Administration. Edwards is proud to be the only presidential candidate who has never taken a dime from any Political Action Committee or Washington lobbyist, because he’s determined to be a voice for regular families like the ones he grew up with.

“I want to make an announcement today,” Edwards said at an event in Washington, Iowa. “No corporate lobbyists or anyone who has lobbied for a foreign government will work in my White House. We will not replace corporate Republicans with corporate Democrats. I hear people argue that the way that you can get things done is to sit at a table with drug companies, insurance companies, oil companies, and negotiate with them and somehow they will voluntarily give away their power. I think this is a complete fantasy.

“I am proud of the fact that I have never taken money from a Washington lobbyist or a special interest PAC my whole time in public life,” Edwards continued. “I don’t think you can bring about change by taking their money or sitting down at a table and trying to make a deal with them. I think if that worked, we would have universal health care, we would be attacking global warming, we’d have a trade policy that makes sense, and we’d have a tax policy that makes sense. I don’t think these people will give up anything without a fight – they’ve been there too long and they have billions of dollars at stake.”

In August, Edwards challenged Senator Clinton and the other presidential candidates to join him in demanding the Democratic Party lead the way to real reform by refusing, as a party, to take campaign contributions from Washington lobbyists. And in October, Edwards unveiled his “One Democracy Initiative” to return the power in Washington to regular people and end the unique power of lobbyists.

Edwards called for prohibiting all candidates and federal office holders from accepting contributions from lobbyists and prohibiting federal lobbyists from acting as bundlers for federal candidates. As president, he will limit the ability of lobbyists to secure lucrative earmarks by enacting a Constitutional version of the line-item veto, where the president can require an up or down vote on special-interest spending. He also proposed curbing lobbyists’ influence by increasing disclosure requirements for lobbyist activity and by prohibiting government executives from accepting gifts and travel from lobbyists and their employers.

Edwards “One Democracy Initiative” also called for closing the revolving door between Capitol Hill and K Street by reinstating the five-year ban on lobbying by former top government officials. Edwards’ new proposal today builds on this by banning any former corporate or foreign government lobbyist from serving in an Edwards Administration.

Over the past few administrations, influencing our government has grown into a big business that employs a mass of lobbyists and lawyers. Lobbying expenditures totaled $5.1 billion during the last Congress. The number of Washington lobbyists has tripled in the past 10 years to almost 36,000—more than 60 for every member of Congress. Edwards believes it’s time to end this permanent government and go back to a Jeffersonian model of public service. He believes there are plenty of skilled, honest and talented people from across our nation who will come to Washington to serve their country for four or eight years.

Edwards Campaign Announces Endorsements From 45 Iowa Leaders Who Backed Other Candidates In 2004

Base of Support Expands as Edwards Offers Bolder Plans to Fight Special Interests in Washington

Des Moines, Iowa – The Edwards campaign today announced endorsements from 45 prominent labor, party, and community leaders and elected officials who supported other presidential candidates in 2004. These leaders’ decision to switch their backing to Edwards in 2008 shows the expansion of his base of support since 2004, as Edwards’ bold plans to take on the special interests in Washington attract leaders from around Iowa.

“I’m proud that so many Iowa leaders agree with my bold plans to fight for hard working, middle-class Americans against the big, powerful corporations that control Washington,” Edwards said. “I am grateful for their support, and I know that together we can rise up to fix this country by guaranteeing universal health care, leveling the playing field for American workers, and achieving energy independence.”

The support of Edwards by leaders who previously endorsed other candidates adds momentum to his surging campaign as Edwards brings his “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” bus tour to 38 Iowa counties in the final eight days before caucus night. Fallon: Drag Your Carcass to the Caucus

Dear Friends,

With the Iowa Caucuses less than a week away, I want to strongly encourage you to participate. What Iowans do on January 3rd is critically important, not just to America but to the world. If you can get there, do . . . and bring a friend or neighbor. If you can’t get there, send the friend or neighbor . . . and ask him or her to bring someone else. All of us should try to be part of this historic event.

Of course, while you’re at your caucus I hope you’ll support John Edwards. I’ve made my case for John several times through these Updates, in dozens of meetings across the state where I’ve spoken as his surrogate and in hundreds and hundreds of phone calls. By now, most of you know my reasons for supporting John Edwards . . . but . . .

. . . you may not have heard from Bill Witt. Bill and I were both elected to the Legislature in 1992 and sat next to each other for six years. He was highly respected for his work on many complex legislative issues, including elder care and a broad range of environmental concerns. Bill and I have remained close friends and co-workers since his retirement from the House in 2002. I would like to share a recent article Bill wrote on John Edwards. At the end of this Update you will find a schedule of John Edwards’ upcoming events in Iowa (INCLUDING A CAUCUS EVE EVENT WITH JOHN COUGAR MELLENKAMP). Thanks! -- Ed Fallon

{The following was written by former State Representative Bill Witt of Cedar Falls}

“I attended my first Democratic Caucus in 1976 and haven’t missed one since. I’ve met and listened to just about every presidential hopeful. John Edwards is the most potent, most electable candidate I’ve seen in 32 years.

“John Edwards is an optimist down to his bones. He’s also a pragmatist. And a worker. He knows it takes a never-give-up spirit, plus a realistic plan, plus hard work if you want to succeed. And he has succeeded at every great effort in his life. In his professional work; in his family life, especially in his loving, strong and resilient marriage of 30 years to Elizabeth; and in his selfless, tireless service to others.

“On the issues, John Edwards has a comprehensive grasp of difficult problems—and an incisive focus on practical solutions. Again and again, he’s been first to bring out the most constructive, detailed plans for handling the challenges we face: health care, Iraq, energy conservation, education, jobs.

“On the keystone issue of preserving our democracy, John Edwards stands like Plymouth Rock. He rejects all lobbyist and PAC money. Rich, powerful special interests can’t get to John Edwards. When he says that, as President, he’ll barnstorm the country until Congress eliminates special interest money from our elections—believe him.

“And John Edwards gives Republican strategists nightmares. He draws a majority of independent voters, plus a sizeable number of moderate Republicans. In head-to-head polling, he’s the only Democrat who defeats every Republican candidate by double-digit margins. He’s the only Democrat with a fighting chance of winning in Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.

“When punched, John Edwards will punch back. The standard Republican dirty tricks of fear and smear don’t work on him. He’ll torpedo any swift-boat the Republicans launch.

“Republicans can’t beat John Edwards. That’s why they’re hoping Democrats will do their dirty work for them. We can’t let that happen. Next Thursday night, we need to send the strongest, most progressive, most electable Democrat on to New Hampshire with a victory.

“John Edwards believes in America. He believes in us. Let’s tell America that Iowa believes in John Edwards.”

Former Obama Supporters, Disappointed By His Record On Lobbyists And Special Interests, Now Support Edwards

The Edwards campaign today released a letter from Iowans who supported Senator Obama earlier in the campaign but now support John Edwards. They are disappointed by Senator Obama’s history of taking $1.5 million from PACs and Washington lobbyists and the support he is getting from a 527 organization at the same time as he attacks other candidates about these organizations.

These Iowans have concluded that bringing about change will require more than rhetoric and that John Edwards – the only candidate in the race who has never taken a dime from PACs or Washington lobbyists – is the one candidate who will fight the powerful special interests to achieve real change.

See below for the text of the letter.

December 28, 2007

Dear Friends:

Earlier in the campaign, we supported Senator Barack Obama because he said he was the candidate of change.

We were disappointed to learn that Senator Obama took $1.5 million from PACs and Washington lobbyists – and only stopped taking their money days before entering the presidential race. Now, he is attacking other campaigns about “527” organizations even though a “527” organization called Vote Hope is supporting his candidacy.

We believe that you can’t achieve real change simply by politely asking for it and then hoping the special interests will agree to voluntarily give up their power and profits. From civil rights to the environmental movement to Social Security and Medicare, big and meaningful change has always required a President willing to stand up and fight for it. Universal health care, stopping global warming, raising the minimum wage, and building a stronger middle class will take more than just rhetoric and hope – we need a president with the backbone to fight for it and a track record of taking on special interests and beating them.

John Edwards is the only candidate in the race who has never taken a dime from PACs or Washington lobbyists. He walked the walk not only by rejecting PAC and Washington lobbyist money from day one, but by taking them on and beating them – including helping lead the fight to pass a Patients’ Bill of Rights in the Senate over the objection of insurance companies, HMOs, and their Washington lobbyists.

We are proud to be supporting John Edwards, a leader with the strength, integrity, and backbone to fight for the real change Iowan and American families deserve. Please join us in caucusing for John Edwards on January 3rd.

Edwards Delivers New Remarks Defining The Type Of Change America Needs

On day two of “America Rising” bus tour, Edwards says American needs a president who won’t capitulate to powerful interests

Today, on day two of his “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” Iowa bus tour, Senator John Edwards delivered remarks defining the type of change American needs. Speaking at the Colts Community Center in Dubuque, Edwards pointed to times in our history when capitulating to powerful entrenched interests would have stopped progress and said that right now America needs a president who will stand up and fight for the bold change our country needs.

“To get real change, we need a president who will stand up against the big corporations and powerful interests who control Washington,” Edwards said. “Nobody who takes their money and defends the broken system is going to bring change. And unfortunately, nobody who thinks we can just sit down and talk them into compromise is going to bring change either. Why on earth would we expect the corporate powers and their lobbyists – who make billions by selling out the middle-class – to just give up their power because we ask them nicely?

Citing the American Revolutionaries who rose up against King George, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who stood up against powerful economic interest for the “forgotten man at the bottom of the economic pyramid,” and Martin Luther King and the leaders of the Civil Rights movement who fought against entrenched bigotry and oppression, Edwards said we must fight for change to change history.

“Compromising your principles and conciliation is the academic theory of change,” Edwards said. “It just doesn’t work in the real world. Fighting for conviction is the historic reality of change.”

As part of his “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” bus tour, Edwards will visit 38 counties and meet with thousands of caucus goers during the final days before the caucuses. During the eight-day tour, Edwards is discussing his vision of an America where every person can work hard and build a better life for their family and his belief that America rises every time we fight for jobs, families, the middle class, universal health care, and an end to poverty.

“History and circumstance have made Iowans the guardians of political power of this nation,” Edwards said today. “When Iowa rises, America will rise. We will defeat greed and fear. The folks in Washington and on Wall Street will hear you loud and clear, and they will know that their grip on power and money is coming loose. They will know that America is rising. And we're coming to take our country back.”

Edwards Campaign Unveils Unprecedented "Ask John" Program To Reach Undecided Iowans In Final Week

Continuing His Commitment to Reach Caucus Goers Throughout the State, Edwards Will Answer Questions from All 99 Counties

On day two of John Edwards' 38-county “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” tour, the Edwards campaign announced the “Ask John” program -- giving undecided Iowans the opportunity to ask questions about any issues that concern them and get answers before they caucus. With just one week to go before caucus night, the program reflects Edwards’ commitment to discussing his bold, specific agenda directly with Iowa caucus goers and answering their questions about the issues that are important to them.

“I believe that anyone running for president has an obligation to listen to the voices of regular people and answer their questions directly,” Edwards said. “In these final seven days, I want every Iowan who has a question to know exactly where I stand and what I’ll do to take on the special interests and give middle class Americans a voice in Washington.”

While other candidates are sending out-of-state surrogates to counties the candidates themselves have never seen, Edwards is making the commitment to respond to questions from Iowans in all 99 counties. Edwards is the only candidate in the race who has visited and answered questions in every county in Iowa. The campaign designed the “Ask John” program to answer as many questions as possible, from as many places in Iowa as possible, in the final days before the caucuses.

“I strongly believe that whether you’re from Des Moines or Harlan, every caucus goer deserves to hear from each candidate about what that person will do as president to fix the broken system in Washington that puts corporate interests ahead of working Americans,” Edwards said.

Undecided Iowa caucus goers can "Ask John" in one of three ways:

1) At events during Edwards' on-going 38 county tour

2) Through a new Web site the campaign launched today -- www.johnedwards.com/askjohn

3) By calling Edwards' Iowa Campaign Headquarters at (515) 288-0766

The “Ask John” program will allow Edwards to answer questions from all 99 counties -- an extension of his status as the only candidate who has personally answered questions from Iowans in all 99 counties. As part of the campaign’s focus on undecided voters, Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, and senior campaign staff members will also answer questions by phone and email -- including organizing special phonebanks to answer questions from "Ask John" questioners.

The campaign will ensure that every questioner receives a response by caucus night.

State Senator Brian Schoenjahn Endorses Edwards For President

Endorsement Adds to Edwards’ Growing Momentum Leading up to the Iowa Caucuses
Today, at an event in Independence, State Senator Brian Schoenjahn (D-Arlington) will officially endorse Senator John Edwards for President. Schoenjahn believes Edwards is the best Democrat to win the caucuses, help Democrats win in November and fight for hard-working middle class families. He has been impressed by Edwards’ detailed plans to change our country, especially his plans to strengthen our schools by overhauling No Child Left Behind and to help rural first responders. Schoenjahn’s endorsement adds to Edwards’ growing momentum in Iowa.

“John Edwards is the Democrat we need to win in the White House and help Democratic candidates in November 2008,” said Schoenjahn. “As a volunteer EMT, I am proud to support his plan to fight for fair funding levels for rural first responders. And as the husband of a dedicated teacher and a member of the Senate Education Committee, I believe he has the best plan to ensure that all children get a great education. I am proud to be a part of John Edwards’ campaign and look forward to working to make him our next president.”

“Brian Schoenjahn is a true Iowa leader and I am proud to have his support,” said Edwards. “Brian has worked hard to build a better life for the next generation of Iowans through his advocacy for family farmers, small towns and all of Iowa’s children. I look forward to working with him to build an America where hard-working families can get ahead.”

Schoenjahn represents Iowa’s 12th district in the State Senate. He is chair of the Education Committee and Vice Chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee and a member of the Commerce, Judiciary, Local Government and Natural Resources and Environment Committees.

Schoenjahn joins a growing list of Iowans who are supporting Edwards. Edwards has recently been endorsed by First Lady Mari Culver and family farm advocate Chris Petersen. In November, Edwards was endorsed by Congressman Bruce Braley.

Edwards continues to gain strength in Iowa. He is currently touring Iowa on his “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” bus tour, where he is drawing energetic crowds who are responding to his vision of an America, where the middle class, not powerful interests, can get ahead.

Edwards Launches Eight-Day, 38-County "America Rising: Fighting For The Middle Class" Bus Tour

In the Final Push Before the Caucuses, Edwards Will Meet with Thousands of Caucus Goers to Discuss His Fight for an America that Works for Middle Class Families; Campaign Launches Two New Ads in Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa – Today, Senator John Edwards is launching an eight-day “America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class” bus tour across Iowa to meet with caucus goers and share with them his plans to stand up to powerful interests and make sure hard-working middle class families can get ahead. During the final days leading up to the caucuses, Edwards will visit 38 counties and meet with thousands of caucus goers to discuss his vision of an America where every person can work hard and build a better life for their family.

“Corporate greed and influence in Washington are stealing our children’s future,” said Edwards. “We will never change this country unless we’re willing to take on these powerful interests. I believe that on the night of January 3rd, Iowans are going to say enough is enough. There’s going to be a rising that begins right here in Iowa, and it’s going to spread across America, and it will be a wave of change that cannot be stopped. Together, we will stand up to these powerful interests, take back our country and make sure we leave our children a better world.”

Edwards comes from a working class family and has spent his life standing up to powerful interests and fighting for regular Americans like the ones he grew up with. As President, he will continue to stand up to these interests and bring change to America. He believes every time we fight for jobs, families, the middle class, universal health care, and an end to poverty, America rises.

Edwards heads into the final days before the caucuses with growing momentum: Polls show him surging; he was recently endorsed by Iowa First Lady Mari Culver and Congressman Bruce Braley; he had a stand-out performance at The Des Moines Register debate; and more and more caucus goers are signing up to support him on January 3rd. Today, Edwards is holding a “Main Street Meet & Greet” in Waukon, “Countdown to Caucus” events in Decorah and Waverly, and an “America Rising” rally in Waterloo.

As part of the final push before the caucuses, today the campaign also unveiled two new 30-second television ads that will begin airing today in Iowa - “Choice” and “Time for Truth.”

Edwards Campaign Statement

Statement from Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, Iowa State Director for John Edwards for President

As polls show John Edwards gaining momentum in Iowa, New Hampshire and across the country, Senator Obama continues to make increasingly harsh, negative attacks against John Edwards - including today in Iowa. Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, Iowa State Director for John Edwards for President, made the following statement:

“It’s no coincidence that as John Edwards rises in the polls in Iowa, Senator Obama is resorting to harsh attacks. But Senator Obama’s attacks can’t hide the fact that for John Edwards, refusing PAC and Washington lobbyist money wasn’t an election year conversion – it’s something he’s done from the beginning of his career. John Edwards is the only candidate with the courage and backbone to urge the Democratic Party to stop taking lobbyist contributions. If Senator Obama is serious about reform, he should join John Edwards in this challenge.

“John Edwards understands that if you give the powerful interests and Washington lobbyists a seat at the table, they’ll eat all the food. That’s why he helped lead the fight against insurance company lobbyists to get a Patients’ Bill of Rights passed in the Senate.”
